How to Choose the Right Translation Partner for Legal Documents

Legal documents carry consequences that a casual translation doesn't — so choosing the right partner matters more than it does for, say, a marketing brochure. Here's what to look for.

Specialist terminology. Look for translators who work specifically with legal language, not general bilingual staff. Legal terms rarely have a single obvious equivalent across languages, and a mistranslated clause can change a contract's meaning.

Independent review. Ask whether every translation goes through a second linguist before delivery. A single-pass translation, however skilled the translator, carries more risk for wording that needs to be exactly right.

Correct classification. Confirm how the provider classifies and certifies a translation — standard, certified, notarized, or sworn — and whether that classification is one the specific institution you're dealing with will actually accept.

Confidentiality. Legal documents often contain sensitive personal or commercial information. Ask directly how a provider protects your documents and who has access to them.

Verifiability. Can the receiving institution independently confirm that a delivered translation is authentic and hasn't been altered since delivery? This is exactly the gap our QR-verifiable certificate closes — every completed translation ships with one, at no extra step for you.
